The Coal Research Center serves as a center of excellence for coal, energy and environmental research. For more than three decades, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has maintained a substantial coal research, education, and service program. The Coal Research Center was established in 1974 to stimulate and coordinate efforts to improve the efficiency of coal mining and coal use.
The Coal Research Center serves as an information clearinghouse for University researchers, assisting with proposals and reports, tracking external funding opportunities, and collecting and maintaining data pertinent to coal, energy, and environmental research.
