Welcome
The Coal Research Center (CRC) serves as a center of excellence for coal, energy and environmental research. For more than three decades, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has maintained a substantial coal research, education, and service program. The CRC was established in 1974 to stimulate and coordinate efforts to improve the efficiency of coal mining and coal use.
The CRC is involved in many areas of coal extraction and utilization, including mining, by-products management, and coal preparation, gasification and syngas processing, carbon management, geochemistry, coal-to-liquids, and chemical production from coal. The CRC supports other energy research areas across campus and collaborates with other departments. The Coal Research Center serves as an information clearinghouse for University researchers, assisting with proposals and reports, tracking external funding opportunities, and collecting and maintaining data pertinent to coal, energy, and environmental research.
