Campus Power Plant
In addition to the laboratory and pilot research done on the SIUC campuses, the university incorporated clean coal technologies into their campus power plant. The central steam plant has used a circulating fluidized bed combustion boiler since 1997.
The facility is available as a test bed for research and development, hosting state and federal projects. These projects have included a USDOE/NETL sponsored project to explore the high temperature application of porous ceramic candle filters for particulates removal in pressurized fluidized-bed combustion.
The University is currently exploring its options and alternatives which include co firing biomass in the CFB and stoker boilers, as well as discontinuing use of the stoker boilers and making the steam with natural gas.
